The Space

A Beer LoveR's Getaway

After a long search for the perfect space, Munkle started construction in 2016 at 1513 Meeting Street Road in downtown Charleston, SC. Mixing traditional textures and warm tones with state of the art brewing equipment created the quintessential Munkle experience: classic with a modern sophistication.

Whether you are meeting friends for a beer (or two) at our indoor-outdoor bar, playing billiards, relaxing outside in our rocking chairs, or watching the big game, Munkle provides the perfect beer lover's getaway.

The Brewmaster

Meet Joe Bowden

After spending the last nine years in Colorado, Munkle Head Brewer Joe Bowden has returned home to the Charleston area. Originally from Summerville/North Charleston, his appreciation for craft beer developed while in college and started home brewing in 2003. Joe earned has BS and Masters degrees from Clemson University.

After graduate school, he moved to Fort Collins, CO and got involved with home brewing and craft brewing scene. His first brewing gig was with Equinox Brewing Company in 2011, the sixth brewery in Fort Collins at the time. Several years later he took a Head Brewing job for C.B. & Potts Restaurant and Brewery, a beloved brew pub chain in the Rocky Mountains.

Joe was Munkle Brewing Company's first hire. We were excited to bring a talented brewer with his experience back home to Charleston! He has a passion for world class beer, especially German Pilsners and Belgian-style Wit beer. When Joe is not hard at work crafting the next tasty brew, you can find him playing and listening to music, golfing, fishing, and spending time with family!
